Receiving Spam that looks like it comes from Freecycle
We are aware of two types of spam emails that appear to be from Freecycle.org, but are NOT being sent from our servers. We have confirmed that our email is being spoofed, making it look like they are coming from us, but they are being sent from outside our system.
Unfortunately, because these messages aren’t actually coming from our system, Freecycle is unable to stop them.
Password Reset spam
If you're not a member of Freecycle but are receiving multiple password reset emails that appear to come from us, you're likely being targeted by a spammer. These emails are not being sent from Freecycle's servers—they're being spoofed to look like they are.
To help us investigate, please:
- Take a screenshot of the top portion of one of these emails, clearly showing the "To" and "From" email addresses.
- Mark the message as spam in your email client. This helps your provider filter similar messages in the future.
We understand how frustrating this is and appreciate your help in reporting it. If you continue to receive multiple spam messages of this type, you may want to create a filter/rule in your email app that sends them directly to your spam folder. Here are instructions for doing that in several email applications: Filter Rules to send emails to Spam.
Cloud storage spam
If you are receiving emails warning you that your cloud storage payment has expired, they are spam. Your best option is to mark them Spam to let your email provider know.
Do not click on any links in this email.
It is not necessary to inform us that you have received this spam. Since it is coming from outside our email system, there is, unfortunately, nothing we can do to stop it.
The email may look like this:
