How to find and copy email headers

Sometimes we need detailed information when trying to resolve an issue with emails. Here are the instructions for finding and copying the email headers in various email applications (please note that this can be done only on a computer, but not on a phone):


Gmail

  • Open the email you want to check the headers for.
  • Click More (three dots at the top-right of the page) and then Show original.
  • Click Copy
  • Paste the copied content into your reply email.

Hotmail/Outlook

  • Click the three dots in the upper right corner of the email.
  • Click "view message source" in the drop-down menu to see the full mail header.
  • Copy the entire page and past it into your reply email

Yahoo

  • Open the message for which you wish to view the headers.
  • Click the More icon (3 dots) above the message pane.
  • In the menu, select View Raw Message.
  • A new tab will open containing your message's headers, which you can now copy and paste into your reply email.

AOL

  • Open the email message by clicking on it.
  • Click on Details (right above the To: and From: fields) and choose View Message Source.
  • The full headers will appear in a new window
  • Right-click inside the headers and choose Select All,
  • Right-click again and choose Copy.
  • Past the copied text into your reply email
